More than two dozen associations representing the outdoor recreation industry and technology companies laid out their industries' priorities for President-elect Donald Trump in two separate letters recently sent to the incoming administration.
In a letter addressed to Vice President-elect Mike Pence, 13 organizations representing various segments of the outdoor industry noted that outdoor recreation contributes about $646 billion annually to the Gross National Product, or about 4 percent of the entire U.S. economy.
"Large segments of the outdoor recreation sector are labor-intensive, meaning that growth in the sector will lead to the creation of additional jobs, and most importantly, sustainable domestic jobs which cannot be outsourced and are oftentimes found in rural communities," the groups said.
The groups urged the Trump administration to establish an outdoor recreation advisory council, invest in infrastructure promoting outdoor recreation, increase federal support for vocational and technical training to provide more skilled workers for manufacturing, and expand recreational access at federally managed lands and waters.

Seventeen business groups representing various tech industries also laid out their priorities in a separate letter to Trump. They noted their industries contribute more than $1 trillion to the U.S. economy.
"As you know, the technology sector consists of industries ranging from silicon to software, social media to digital services, factory computing to supply-chain management, and from smart vehicles to virtual reality," the groups said. "Our technologies enable growth and unlock efficiencies across the entire U.S. economy."
The groups noted that Trump has promised to invest in infrastructure. They asked the president-elect to think beyond just "concrete and steel" to consider also investing in technology infrastructure, although they didn't spell out the forms those investments could take.
The groups also pushed for tax reform and a government workforce that works "faster and smarter."
